This machine is made from stamped, nickel plated steel. The main housing of this device was made from a single stamping that was later machined. Based on my 20+ years experience in the metal stamping industry, I can categorically state that this was a very hard part to make, even with today's technology. I can't imagine what it was like to have to make this part with the available tooling, material, presses, and lubricant technology of the 1920's. When the lever is depressed, the "S" shaped profile of the ram/anvil causes the paper to buckle. Further travel of the lever causes the pin to be inserted into the folds of the paper. This machine was patented in January of 1926. Most (if not all) of the Pinzit machines that exist are marked "PAT'S PEND" (instead of being stamped with a patent date). This indicates that this machine was produced for a very short time before 1926. This is not a common device. Because of the unusual design and rarity of pinning machines in general, Pinzit machines do not come cheap. Prices range from $80 to $200. Fridolin Polzer of the E. H. Hotchkiss Co. patented a similar device five months later in May of 1926. The Hotchkiss version was more complicated, using concatenated (proprietary strip type) pins instead of standard "bankers" pins. |
